The two most common rodent invaders in the Waukesha-Milwaukee metro are the common field or house mouse, and the Norway rat.

Mice are small with tails that are as long as their bodies. Mice are nocturnal and like to run along or behind stuff so that they have coverage from predators, So they will naturally run right along the foundation area’s of your structure. When they do, they can smell food and other scents permeating from in side the house. With our extreme temperatures here, the building is always expanding and contracting which caused voids that you normally can’t see but air will escape those voids and mice will smell it and want to investigate.
Mice only need a void about the size of a pencil so it won’t take much of an opening for them to enter. Mice actually rarely live inside your home because they are constantly mating and need food and water. However, they are habitual so they will continue to come back over and over. On top of that, Mice leave urine trails to attract mates.
This means even 1 mouse entering your home is attracting more Mice. They also leave droppings, gnaw marks and are common sources of allergies in humans, not to mention diseases, fleas etc.

Norway rats grow from 7 to 10 inches long and have a long tail. Rats will always travel along the same runways and leave dark colored smudge marks from the oil and dirt on their fur. They leave droppings, gnaw marks and are common sources of allergies in humans, not to mention diseases, fleas etc.
Norway rats have been battled by humans for hundreds of years and are extremely difficult to control. They are smart and will be very cautious to things in there environment like a new bait station. We call it bait shyness. If you put some poison out, they will watch the rats that fed on the bait and if they see them getting sick, they will not continue to eat it.
In addition, once you get them to except the bait, it will take months for the amount of rats you are exterminating to catch up to and surpass their reproduction cycles.
The common Norway rat can be found nesting in Wisconsin homes or burrowing in your yard. This rodent is slightly different from the house mouse’s appearance. The bright white chest contrasts with the dull gray body, which ranges from a large 7- 10 inches. This is approximately 40% larger than a mouse’s tail. Norway rats have very powerful jaws and teeth that can chew through and damage almost anything, including pipes, flooring, and drywall. Structural damage from rats can lead to fires and water leaks.
Norway Rats are very difficult to control and if not done properly from the start, they will develop bait shyness making it extremely difficult to get under control. Rats have litters of 8-12 babies every 5 weeks, and the babies are sexually mature within 6 weeks. The population is constantly getting larger, and even after we get our system in place, it will take about 3 months to start getting it under control. What we would do is Install bait stations on the outside perimeter of your building which would prevent them from entering your structure looking for food and will start eliminating the population. The stations are tamper-proof and are safe for people, kids and pets. We offer monthly or quarterly service based on your specific needs.

Rodents (especially mice) are a year round problem in Wisconsin. Mice may look cute in the movies, but in reality they are rodents that will nest in your walls, ceilings and attic, destroy your property, leave feces on floors and countertops and contaminate everything that they come in contact with. Urine and feces from rodents is a leading cause of indoor air pollution and can also cause or aggravate allergies. Mouse droppings also commonly contain bacteria that causes food poisoning and is easily spread throughout your home on the body of the mouse itself.
Call us today and we will help you to reclaim your home or commercial property from rodents! While our technicians will make the final determination upon viewing your property, most commonly we will focus on the rodent problem outside the property as well as inside. Mice and other rodents commonly enter through cracks or holes in the foundation, gaps under siding, dryer vents, gaps in roof and chimney flashings and a variety of other places. A mouse can enter your home through a hole or gap not much larger than the width of a pencil. Midwest Pest Control offers a complete rodent control system, either as a stand-alone product, or as an add on to one of our other services.
