Millipedes are long, segmented arthropods with many legs, usually dark brown to black in color. They have two pairs of legs per body segment, and can range from 1/16 inch to 4.5 inches long.

Millipedes are small and worm-like with many legs, but are distinctly separate from centipedes. Most millipedes are brown or black in color and can be found outdoors under bricks, stones or in soil or debris. They eat plants and decaying material and move very slowly. Millipedes do not bite and are not known to carry diseases dangerous to humans, however they do emit a bad smell and it can be quite unnerving to find them inside your home. Often you will find them crawling across the floor or dried out and curled out. Midwest Pest Control will stop millipedes outside your home so you don’t have to deal with them on the inside.

Millipedes prefer damp environments and are often found outdoors underneath mulch, rotten wood, and stones. They can also be found in flowerbeds, gardens, and under structures like dog houses and storage sheds.

Millipedes are slow-moving and docile, and will often curl up into a spiral shape when disturbed. They can emit an unpleasant fluid and odor to defend themselves, and the fluid may cause skin irritation and allergic reactions in some people.

Keeping bushes trimmed away from the structure as well as avoiding mulch near the foundation will help keep Millipedes away from the building.  Using a dehumidifier in the basement or lower level can also help keep them from entering the building.

We will apply a crack and crevice treatment inside your home to eliminate crawling insect harborages and ‘clean out’ your home or commercial property of insects. Then we apply a barrier treatment around the foundation, usually several feet up the side of the structure and ten feet out into the yard to keep the pests from coming back. Treatments generally last for 90 days so a quarterly service plan is often recommended although we do offer one time treatments that are highly effective as well. With our service plan we will refresh the insect barrier around your home every 90 days so that inside treatments are no longer necessary as crawling insects will not be able to get back inside and reestablish themselves.

We also offer combo treatment plans that include crawling insects and rodents, as well as add-on specialty pest treatments for mosquito’s, ticks, bees, wasps and carpenter ant infestations.
